BLACK MIDI SWEATER

Mercury nominated band black midi emerged out of Brit School and frequented indie-famous venue The Brixton Windmill in their early stages. Their sound is refreshingly unique as they compose experimental pieces using classic rock instruments, veering into psychedelia and even jazz.  Mostly based around one guitar chord, and two bass notes, black midi’s new single ‘Sweater’ is a minimal and mesmerising journey. The drums and percussion are sparse and whimsical with use of bells, snare rolls and rim shots. The clean lead guitar is eerie and wonderfully psychedelic, hitting notes that drift into atonality. Georgie’s vocals are for the most part a lyric-less, possessed splurge of expression. Later, the track becomes more hectic, and gains speed, dramatised by the gain in momentum, cymbal splashes and screaming guitars. ‘Sweater’ is nearly 12 minutes long, but midi make sure that every second is truly captivating, leaving you with an elated sensation. -Ellie Rose-Davies
